This last Sunday (the 5th of February) marks what some people would consider the most important day of the year – Super Bowl Sunday. It is a huge day – millions and millions of people tune in to watch the game… or if you’re like me and don’t have a team to root for, you like the commercials more than anything. Either way, our attention is on our food, drinks, and the television. Super Bowl Sunday is also the biggest day out of the year for something else – Shaken Baby Syndrome cases. Yes, that one day brings in more cases of SBS than any other day of the year – every year. It is easy to get so into a game that you forget what’s going on around you, such as the hot stove burner left on, the barking dog or the snow piling up outside. It is also easy to be annoyed by an infant that will not stop crying. We all know how people react when their favorite team is losing or what happens when they throw an interception at the last moment – from screaming to hitting the arm of the couch and cursing to tipping a table over. People have strong reactions, and sometimes they don’t realize how hard they are shaking the infant when trying to “quiet” them (especially after that huge fumble that could cost the game!!). These quick actions result in trauma to the brain and neck of the baby. The biggest problem is that most cases of SBS go unreported unless sever trauma or death occur. Many children are walking around today with problems stemming from brain trauma as an infant that were never treated, so please, please be aware of what is going on around you and make sure to keep those kiddos safe!

Don’t forget - on March 6th from 5-9 pm, Applebee’s will be donating 10% of their profits to help support C.A.R.E. Flyers are out, and we will be distributing them soon! The flyer must be presented when paying for us to receive the 10%. I can e-mail the flyers if you cannot pick one up. Please let people know about the opportunity, and contact me (308-865-5675) if you have any questions!!!
